ImagicBelow are the links to an old PBS business program, showcasing Imagic when they were just getting off the ground. I little slice of life of the video game industry, just before the mid-80s video game crash. You get a sense that this frenzy over video games in the early 80s was very similar to the dot com boom and bust.

  1. MadaracsNo Gravatar Said,

I totally remember a lot of those games!

  2. MadaracsNo Gravatar Said,

That was a lot of fun to watch. Even in 1982 they were starting towards the Video Game crash…

They are on the crest, just before the crash, and totally oblivious to it. I remember just before the dot com crash, there was this publication that came out with how many more months of cash a handful of dot com companies had. Even though these predictions were more or less dead on, everyone involved in the boom ignored it, because they didn’t want the ride to stop. Complete denial.

We are currently in a video game slump, not a crash. Back in the 80s, video games were still considered a fad. When the slump hit then, the thinking among the main stream was that video games are now dead.

Now games are part of our culture. There is confidence that they will bounce back. That confidence wasn’t there in the 80s.

We are now entering the 2nd wave of the dot com industry (maybe 3rd, I dunno). When this wave crests and starts coming down, it will be more of a slump. The internet industry has a foundation.
