Nothing earth shattering, but nice to see the old boy still keeping up with things.

New retro Sega console to be released this summer in the UK. Can’t ascertain when or if it will be released in the US. I’ll let Commander Tim give the review of the games that are included. My quick take is – I like the price and that it has wireless controllers. Apparently there is no way to add new games. An SD slot would be killer.
Something that will be released stateside – Atari Flashback 2+. Expected release is later this month. Same as the Flashback 2, except subtle changes in the game lineup, and some bug fixes. You get a nifty t-shirt if you pre-order.
I’m not sure how many other Futurama fans we have reading this, but when this came across the wire this morning, I knew I had to share.
So, in the classic Futurama episode ‘Anthology of Interest II‘, there’s a segment titled ‘Raiders of the Lost Arcade’, where Fry is tasked with saving earth from invaders, possibly from space, that bear a remarkable resemblance to a certain arcade title from the 70s developed by Taito. Using his pro techniques (“Watch as I fire upwards through our own shields!”) and his all Rush mix-tape, Fry succeeds in repelling the aliens from the planet Nintendoo 64. One of my favorite episodes ever, for reasons I feel need no explanation.
Fast-forward to now, and we have “Invaders! Possibly from Space” developed by Shinobi of Shinobis-Place. Lovingly recreated, every aspect of the classic episode is there; the all Rush soundtrack, the Invaders, the voices… according to the site, it took 7 months to put it together, and the quality is fantastic.
Considering how many IP laws this thing is breaking, it probably won’t last long, so get it while you can. Windows required, but it runs fine in most 3D acceleration supporting VMs as well. If the link above is dead, or you’re paranoid about the other link, I’m hosting a copy on my server as well. Virus scanned and re-compressed into a zip for maximum portability. Enjoy.
Free Left 4 Dead game for an NES emulator near you… coming in January. I’ll be there! I have an inkling it will come off looking like Gauntlet, but I don’t care.
Revision 3 has started a vidcast of indie game reviews, “bytejacker“. The format seems to be a full review of a cheap pay game, then they have smaller reviews of free indie games. The host can be a bit obnoxious, but not a show-stopper. They are four episodes into this, each episode is about ten minutes long. Some fun looking games in their latest episode.
